MY ATELIER, MY STORY

Studio OL은 이번 디자이너스 초이스 전시에서 Micro-publishing을 주제로 아뜰리에 공간을 구성 했다. 사진과 프린팅의 보편화로 출판이 개인의 영역으로 들어왔고, 책의 내용을 찾고, 모으고 그 결과물들을 편집하며 표지제작과 제본까지 이어지는 일련의 수작업은 개인의 생각과 경험, 기억과 감각을 하나의 농축된 오브제로 만들어내는 아주 매력적인 작업이다. 밀집된 형태의 오브제인 책으로 묶이기 전 각기 존재하던 낱장들과 작가가 대화하는 모습이 이 공간의 모티브가 되었다. 낱장들을 펼쳐놓고 책을 구상하고 내용을 조정하는 이 흥미로운 과정이 공간에 펼쳐지는 모습이랄까?
벽에서 튀어나온 철봉들의 단면에 설치된 자석은 종이를 아주 쉽고 빠르게 부착하게 해준다. 아 뜰리에에서 쓰이는 수많은 재료와 공구들은 철봉들에 걸리거나 매달리며, 철봉에 꿰어진 선반과 조명은 이 공간 어디로나 옮겨질 수 있는 무한한 flexibility를 얻는다. 공구와 가구, 그리고 공간이 철봉이라는 하나의 요소의 반복으로 하나가 되는 것이 이 작업의 공간 개념이다.
이번 전시에서 중점을 둔 부분 중 하나는 관람객이 작가의 시점에서 이 공간을 바라보고 느낄 수 있게 하는 것이었다. ‘ㄷ자’형으로 작업대를 배치하고 관람객이 그 안쪽 동선으로만 들어올 수 있 게 함으로써 그들은 아뜰리에의 중심에 서서 이 공간에 떠 있는 이미지와 관, 도구들에 둘러싸인다.
아뜰리에는 작가와 함께 끊임없이 진화하는 공간이다. 기능적으로 작가와 그가 하는 활동에 최적 화된 공간. 그러면서도 작가에게 영감을 주는 공간이어야 한다. 그리고 작가에게 가장 많은 영감을 줄 수 있는 것은 다른 무엇보다도 작가 자신의 흔적과 그가 만든 작업이다. 이번 전시에서 우 리가 제시한 아뜰리에는 이렇게 작가가 스스로의 작업과 대화를 이어가는 공간이다.
For the designer’s choice exhibition at Seoul Living Design Fair, Studio OL showed an atelier under the theme of micro-publishing. With the general popularity of photography and printing, publishing has entered the individual realm. Finding the content for a book, gathering the material, and editing, to creating the book cover and binding – this chain of hand work has become an attractive process that takes the individual’s personal thoughts, experiences, and senses to create a concentrated object.
The motive for this space is based on the existential stage prior to the book as a finished object, as it exists as a dialogue between the artist and the individual pages. Picture the book with the individual pages spread out in front of you while creating your work; it is a space that showcases this exiting process.
The protruding poles have magnets that allow paper to be easily and quickly attached. The many materials and tools used inside the atelier are hung or placed on the poles. The shelves and lighting attached to the poles are easily moveable giving endless flexibility. The meaning to this space comes from the materials, furniture and space becoming together as one with the repetition of one object, the pole.
One of the focuses of our exhibition was to allow the visitor to see the space in the perspective of the artist by purposely placing the work desk in the center area of the space, and providing a standing point for the spectator with a view of the entire room. That way, the spectator may visualize the images, tubes, and tools taking in the entire work process of the artist.
